Hard Work
Hard workà will not guarantee you success. Let me explain ââ¬â the hardest working athletes are not the ones making the most money. The most talented ones in any sport are not often described as being ââ¬Å"hard workingâ⬠The person who is putting in 12 hour days, sweating and plodding along? Getting the job done and earning very little reward? Do people get promoted within the organization on work ethic alone? Isnââ¬â¢t usually because they know someone, have a natural knack for something, have more ââ¬Å"educationâ⬠, or were just in the right place at the right time?Iââ¬â¢m not saying thatà hard workà goes unnoticed. Coaches, managers, leaders ââ¬â they often go out of their way to acknowledge and praise hard-workers. They are held up as examples to the others and given momentary spotlights, but in the end, itââ¬â¢s not the attribute that brings success. I have seen a lot of hard-working people get treated unfairly over my career in all avenues of life. The person that quietly goes about their business and bothers no one is rarely acknowledged. The person who has a knack for doing a lot of things well is ââ¬Å"too valuableâ⬠to move to higher positions of authority.Hard working people are often not vocal enough to ââ¬Å"too their own hornâ⬠and get noticed, so they are not noticed (they believe their work speaks for itself). How many people do you know that are the fall guy to get stuff done? If no one else wants to do it, we know the guy or gal we can count on to get ââ¬Ëer done, right? Am I wrong? So what value is ââ¬Å"working hardâ⬠, and why should we work hard, or expect those we lead work hard as well if there isnââ¬â¢t a visible payoff? Well, thereââ¬â¢s 2 things here I want to say.Number 1 ââ¬â as a leader, if you have people in your organization that work hard ââ¬â make sure you acknowledge them and take a deep, accurate look at how you treat them. Are you taking advantage of them? More importantly ââ¬â you, the hard-worker. Why should you work hard? Do you work hard for a reward (pay, promotion, or prestige)? Should you work hard for these things? What about for self-pride? Iââ¬â¢m talking ego ââ¬â Iââ¬â¢m talking good pride. Iââ¬â¢m talking about sleeping well at night, knowing that whether you work for someone else, or work for yourself, you can take pride in putting forth an ffort today that made you, your oganization, and others you served better. I think thereââ¬â¢s much value in hard work, and I believe that kind of pride in working hard reflects our creator. But be careful, donââ¬â¢t try and equate hard work and being busy as one thing. Iââ¬â¢ve seen plenty of people that are masters at being busy doing nothing, appearing to work hard, and leveraging that to try and get ahead. That shows very little self-pride as well. So work hard, get satisfaction from doing a good job. Take pride in what you do.Just donââ¬â¢t ask your w ork to be the catalyst for pushing you to higher levels of success ââ¬â that is asking too much of something so simple. Thoughts on hard work? Hard Work CAN Kill You Hard work never killed anyone. (Proverbial) Overworking can be seriously damaging to your health. Stress and long hours heart problems, increased susceptibility to infection, fatigue disorders like CFS/MEâ⬠¦ and even suicide. We live in a world where we often feel pushed toà doà more. You might be under pressure from your peers, your parents, or society in general. You might well have internalized these influences ââ¬â and you may believe that to be ââ¬Å"successfulâ⬠, you need to have a high-flying career or a huge salary. Ultimately, though, you wonââ¬â¢t be able to enjoy the fruits of your hard work if you ruin your health in the process. Working hard isnââ¬â¢t always a good thing. It can actually end up being selfish and destructive, if: * Your long hours cause problems for your family * Y ouââ¬â¢re short-tempered with colleagues or employees * You make mistakes because youââ¬â¢ve been working too hard You lose your sense of perspective, and let work take over your life How to Keep Work in Perspective Recognize the importance of other things ââ¬â like friends, family, hobbies, sufficient rest and relaxationâ⬠¦ If youââ¬â¢re working hard in the hopes of retiring early, ease up on work and enjoy yourà whole life a little more ââ¬â instead of hoping for a few golden years at the end of it. If youââ¬â¢re working hard to buy more things for your kids, ask yourself whether itââ¬â¢s really more money that they need ââ¬â or your presence. If youââ¬â¢re working hard because you feel that you ââ¬Å"shouldâ⬠ââ¬â then remember that this isà your life, and itââ¬â¢s up to you to decide how to live it. * *

Civil Peace
Civil Peace Chinua Achebe The short story ââ¬Å"Civil Peaceâ⬠by Chinua Achebe is about a man named Jonathan Iwegbu, his wife Maria and his three surviving children. Chinua Achebeââ¬â¢s emphasis in his short story is how Jonathan and his family are trying to get on with their lives after the Civil War in Nigeria. Moreover, there is a phrase that Jonathan says several times through his story, ââ¬Å"nothing puzzles Godâ⬠. What does Jonathan means when he says this? The story starts off with Jonathan realizing how lucky he is to have survived the war along with his wife and three of his four children, one of his sons did not survive. He also mentions that his old bicycle which he had buried in the ground a year earlier just needed a little greasing and was able to be used again. This is also where Jonathan first uses the phrase ââ¬Å"Nothing puzzles Godâ⬠, (page 29). I think that in this part of the story Jonathan means that although his bicycle had been buried in th e ground for a year all that it needed to work again was a little oil. Most people may have thought that the bicycle would have been no good or puzzled by the fact that it worked, but God knew that it would be okay, so Jonathan places his faith in God, ââ¬Å"Nothing puzzles Godâ⬠. Jonathan immediately put his bicycle to use as a taxi to earn money. He then mentions that he makes the journey to Enugu and when he arrives he finds another miracle. His little house is still standing, ââ¬Å"he discovers that miraculously his own modest home is intactâ⬠, Dameron Charles, ââ¬Å"Chinua Achebeâ⬠, A Reader's Companion to the Short Story in English, paragraph 15.He again uses the phrase ââ¬Å"nothing puzzles Godâ⬠. Jonathan talks about the fact that just two houses away a huge concrete structure is no longer there, but his tiny little house has survived. As this point, I think Jonathan means that despite the war and hardship a small house withstood the effects of the war and Jonathan and his family had a place to return to. Jonathan after fixing his home opens a palm-wine bar for soldiers and people who had a lot of money. He opens this bar rather than going back to work as a miner. Jonathan talks of receiving twenty pounds from the treasury which he eceived for turning in rebel money and how he felt like it was Christmas because he had so much money. He attracts the attention of thieves who show up at his home that night to steal the money. Jonathan explains how he is usually a heavy sleeper but on this night he hears ever noise. He finally falls asleep and is awakened by knocking at the door. Jonathan and his wife scream for the police and for their neighbors but no one comes to help them. The thieves want one hundred pounds, but Jonathan tells them that he only has the twenty pounds that he had received from the treasury.Jonathan agrees to hand over the twenty pounds and the thieves leave. When Jonathan tells people of the robbery the next morni ng, he again uses the phrase ââ¬Å"Nothing puzzles Godâ⬠, (page 34). I believe that Jonathan means that with everything that has happened, the war, his sonââ¬â¢s death, his bicycle being recovered, his house still standing, and finally the robbery that God has a plan for everything and although we may not understand what that plan is God does and therefore nothing puzzles God.He is a humble man, ââ¬Å"He is a modern, and modest, hero, a rural counterpoint to the doomed Gladysâ⬠. Dameron Charles, ââ¬Å"Chinua Achebeâ⬠, A Reader's Companion to the Short Story in English, paragraph 15. Chinua Achebe is aware of Jonathanââ¬â¢s feelings and he knows about his suffering and of his family members. However, the writer mentioned that Jonathan has a strong faith of God. Moreover, Jonathan always keeps his optimistic view of life and that is very important for all readers.

Understanding Leadership Styles
Understanding leadership styles within an organisation Set out here the various leadership styles ie Alimo Metcalfe The engaging leadership model. Also add afew more . The set the scene for LBE Ethos for leadership. Followed by my own style of management and what impact that as on the team. This assignment will firstly address the meaning of leadership, followed The Leadership role is said to be ââ¬Å"the manner and approach of providing direction, implementing plans and motivating peopleâ⬠(Us Army handbook 1973Miltary Leadership) There are said to be three styles of leadership, 1, Authoritarian or Autocratic , Participative or democratic 3, Delegative or free reign Good leaders are said to use all three styles of leadership, with one being more dominate than the others. Leaders that tend not to be good at their role tend to use only one style. Authoritarian This style is used when the leader tells an employee what she/he wants done and how of this method is when you have all the information to solve the problem but there is little time and the employees are well motivated. This style should only be used on rare occasions. This can be used if staff needs to be instructed to complete a piece of work. Participative This leadership style involves the leader and one or more employee, in the decision making. However it is the leader that makes the final decision. This method is used when the leader has part of the information and the employees have the other. The leader does not have to know everything; hence the employee being a knowledgeable and skilful employee could assist the leader.Using this style is of a mutual benefit, as it allows the employee to feel part of a team and allows the leader to make better decisions. This style of managing is useful if you wish the staff to be involved in the decision making and allows the staff to be part of the team. It also enables the managers to utilise the skills, experience and expertise within the team. Delegativ e In this style the leader allows the employee to make the decision. The leader however remains responsible for the decisions that are made. This method can be used when the employees are able to analyse the situation and decides what is to e done and how to do it, it allows for the leader to set priorities and delegate certain tasks. This should be used when there is full trust and confidence in the employee. The forces that influence the style to be used are: * How much time is available * Are relationship based on respect and trust or on disrespect and mistrust. * Who has the information * How well employees are trained and how well they know the task. * Internal conflicts Stress levels * Type of task i. e. structured, unstructured, complicated, or simple. * Laws or established procedures. In using this style of managing is what you would want to have within your team, but this would be dependant on the member of staff, their skills, experience and whether they can be trusted to c arry out their task. The London Borough of Enfield has devised a document called the ââ¬Å"Councils Leadership Competencies Framework, which describes the competencies and levels that they want their leaders to aspire to.The framework has been developed to reflect the councilââ¬â¢s ethos and the major changes that are to take place within the council, with a shrinking budget and resources and an ever more rising demands on our services. The model that the council promotes is one that gives leaders the opportunity to analyses their leadership roles and responsibility. The London Borough of Enfield has thirteen competencies within the framework. These are arranged in four clusters, Personal Resources, Core Behaviours, Leadership and Technical and Professionals Skills. There is an expectation that as managers we will adopt this style of leadership. Views a

The quite dine lights all over the food court are also giving a positive vibes and will not give you a wrong impression that you are in different place other than chowking. In general, I can say that the place is well kept and the floors and laboratories are clean. During my stay in chowking I noticed that some sensitive customers are complaining about how the waiter takes out their left over because waiter takes out the food using plastic bag and a paper bag only. 10) RECOMMENDATION. Iââ¬â¢m looking forward that the management of chowking will someday consider having a comfort room inside the store so that the customerââ¬â¢s will not go to the public restroom of the mall. III.)CONCLUSION. In my stay in Chowking I have many things to conclude. First the staff and the managers who treated us a regular staff and not only as a trainee. They welcome us with their smile on their faces. Second my on job training is hard but I must say that I enjoyed it very much you will be able to meet different kind of personality. They taught me how to handle guest discriminating them with their satus. Summary of Status Report (In Emiramona Garden Hotel) During on my job training at emiramona it was existing at the same hard I met different kinds of people here because we not only have Filipino guest but also foreigners. My duty was always 8:00 AM in the morning until 8:00 PM evening and sometimes passed 8:00 if my manager or captain waiter wants to me overtime. Night shift again, I feel so bored today as GRS (Guest relation service. I donââ¬â¢t know why I had this feeling. I need to easy the laziness inside of me. When 7:00 PM arrives, the laziness and the boredom I felt, disappear because the guest have come take an under time we had four Korean guests, two ladies and 2 men. After I made the table set up in their table, one of them says thank you to me in our language, Filipino I felt slightlyà shocked because of what he said. Because sometime when we had foreigner guest they speak pure English but one of different. Then I said heââ¬â¢s welcome. Then they give me a smile before I left. We have two parties today at the same time, one function hall and the other is in the dining area. Because of the overflowing of guests, I felt so tired, thanks to God our store are air-conditioned if not god it be a very hot day. Actually I should be in store at 12:00 noon but unfortunately I have my Saturday Class so I was not able to come in time. Today I because I had a headache, before I went to store, I to school to take an exam. But I didnââ¬â¢t my professor was not there. Our manager didnââ¬â¢t allow me first because itââ¬â¢s against the policy. So I told our manager that it will never happened again, just for the day. And then he I let me we have so many guest today because of that even the function hall was open for them. I felt so tired so that night. My duty is GRS but because of the overflowing guest, I helped the food servers. I do what they asked me to do because of the things they asked me to do I end up aching legs and so very tired. We have tree parties today at the same time. One birthday parties and two baptisms. The birthday held at the function hall and other at the dining area. And at the same day we have other party by 6:00 PM, the party of the big boss. Thank God my movements in serving food were faster than usual. And my period didnââ¬â¢t stop me in my work Due to few OJTs that will handle the situation; I extended an hour to help them. As a kitchen staff in chowking I developed my skill and I learn about serving the juice and meal for the guest because my position in chowking is cook or kitchen staff. Summary of Status Report (In restaurant) My on the job training in chowking is not that easy. But I must say that Iââ¬â¢m happy because I take my ojt here. In my first day. I was afraid, nervous and exited at the sametime .afraid and nervous because this is my first time to take training in an establishment and exited because it is another challenge for me as an HRM student. 10 things you learned about American history Essay
10 things you learned about American history - Essay Example The document had the traits of democratic principles the country would be based on. Signing of the Declaration marked the end of the war and signaled the desire of the former colony to build its own state. The declaration was a new phenomenon for its times and marked the end of the era of empires. 3. I learned different groups within the same society can have different views on the rights. In this view the history of Mexican-American War is significant because resulted in the acquisition of new territories and marked the nationââ¬â¢s potential for expansion. However, the war was very divisive both in Congress and the society. The war brought the problem of sectionalism to the surface. What is more, the debates in the Congress bore the seeds of growing tensions between northern and southern states concerning their different views on slavery. 4. I learned that from the start the concept of equality was important for the USA. The Civil War became the major conflict caused, among other factors, by the different views on the principles underlying the structure of the society, namely the belief that all men were born equal. The Civil War was the largest military conflict in the history of the country at the time. It was the first occasion when hostilities started because the nation itself was divided and not as a result of the aggression from the outside. For me the Civil War is significant because it led to the abolishment of slavery and the establishment of the society we know today. 5. I learned that in the modern world, there is no such thing as local war. In this view, World War II demonstrated that countries could no longer be isolated. Even though military aggression of Germany and Japan did not pose immediate threat to the US territory, the bombing of Pearl Harbor proved that Nazism endangered all the humanity and concerned every nation. The decision of the US to join the war marked the

The career ladder Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
The career ladder - Research Paper Example Career ladder is a concept where allied health field workers have to work to achieve a better position. Specific goals are set up for these health workers which they have to achieve so that they can become successful. After completing the goals of the career ladder the individual can advance to a better position along with a better salary. Career ladder has been implemented in many fields and it has been found that it is quite successful. It has its own benefits and drawbacks which are discussed subsequently (Zellmer 2002; Swanson et al 1991; Fitzgerald 2006). Benefits and Drawbacks of the Career Ladder The career ladder concept in the allied health disciplines is very important to practice clinical knowledge. Patients who are coming for treatment require expertise of all the departments so that they can be cured and every allied health field worker has to play his specific role to cure the patient. The career ladder concept helps the workers to work with integrity so that they can a chieve a better grade in the society. It also helps the workers to become familiar with the concepts of health care so that they can excel in their particular field. Being a pharmacist the career leader would help him to achieve clinical knowledge which he can implement in his practice. ... A career ladder helps the individuals to go through different tasks where he can accomplish different goals. These goals would help him to receive a variety of rewards and perks. In other words career ladders are possibly a way through which different workers can advance in their field. Career ladders also help to increase job satisfaction as has been found through different researches. On the other hand it can be seen that career ladder can also bring drawbacks to the allied health field workers. The workers who do not go through this career ladder concept would not be able to excel in their field and would remain on the position that they have joined. Some people do not want to take part in this concept and would make them lose interest in their job. Similarly people who cannot qualify this ladder concept would be further discouraged in trying to excel in this field. A career ladder gives way to specific individuals so that they can progress whereas some are still left behind becau se every individual in the field cannot be a leader. The workers have to take extra load in order to achieve the goals of a career ladder and this can result in dissatisfaction (Smith & Shane 1989; Zellmer 2002; Buchan 1997). Career Ladder as Implemented in DVA Career ladder has been used by many organizations and one of the organization which is using it is the Department of Veteran Affairs. The Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) has such a career ladder established for pharmacists where they can advance in their field with specific requirements. It is seen that pharmacists are required to produce effective clinical knowledge and expertise and if these are not integrated in their
Comparison of the Concepts of Education as the Process of Learning by Essay
Comparison of the Concepts of Education as the Process of Learning by Frederick Douglass and Malcolm X - Essay Example In todayââ¬â¢s society, education, as a concept, has evolved to be taken synonymously with schooling (Lear 2). However, while it is undeniable that formal schooling is an integral aspect of education today, understanding and promoting education within this limited context leaves students unable to benefit from its full potential; hindering their full development as individuals. Education is a process of knowing. While formal schooling can undoubtedly contribute to this process, it is but one of many means to achieve an education. Looking at Frederick Douglass and Malcolm Xââ¬â¢s experiences, one can illustrate how education can also be achieved through self-study. Douglass, for example, was deprived of formal education as a result of his status as a slave. He laments in his autobiography, ââ¬Å"education and slavery were incompatible with each otherâ⬠because, in the words of his master, it ââ¬Å"would forever unfit him to be a slaveâ⬠(53, 49). Malcolm X, although not necessarily deprived of formal schooling, did not finish beyond the eighth grade because of a disheartening talk with one of his professors (Malcolm X 36-37). Thus, he notes, ââ¬Å"[his] alma mater was books, a good libraryâ⬠(203). Nonetheless, both men educated themselves. However, although it is possible to educate oneself without formal schooling, self-education is not a simple process. Douglass himself writes he is ââ¬Å"conscious of the difficulty of learning without a teacherâ⬠(50). In this respect, what allowed both Malcolm X and Douglass to succeed in their self-studies is the fact that they are determined and dedicated in their own education. Malcolm X, for example, tirelessly began teaching himself how to read by copying pages of the dictionary by hand, learning the words and reciting them aloud. Since learning how to read, he notes, ââ¬Å"from then until I left that prison, in every free moment I had, if I was not reading in the library, I was reading in my bunk.
